The history of Macrame :

Macrame is an ancestral manual activity dating back to the 13th century. The art of macrame first developed in Spain, then throughout Europe and the world. For decades marines have sold or traded their own macrame creations made during the long months at sea, which has allowed this art to be developed worldwide with creations from all countries.

Many natural fibres are used to make rope:

  • hemp
  • cotton
  • sisal
  • jute
  • linen
  • coconut fibre

The strongest material is hemp. The most used materials in decoration are cotton and jute.

  • Polypropylene
  • Textured polypropylene (synthetic hemp)
  • Polyester
  • Nylon (Polyamide)
  • Polyethylene
  • Steel
  • Latex

The breaking strength of a rope varies according to its raw material, construction, density, and diameter.

Download our comparison of the breaking resistance of all our natural and synthetic ropes from 2mm to 40mm!

The tensile strength is the tensile capacity of a new rope when it is new, static, straight, knot-free and splicing-free. A tolerance of +/- 7% is always applied for the breaking resistance of a rope. For safety, no more than 80% of the breaking load of a rope when it is new should be used.

Expressed in KG, it refers to the tension capacity at standstill (weight); while expressed in decanewton (DaN), it refers to the tension capacity in motion (weight x speed). The use of a rope reduces its breaking resistance.

The main factors that attenuate a rope’s strength are: moisture, UV rays, heat, frost, abrasion, knots, splicing and chemical agents.

We advise you to use the twisted cotton rope 3mm. It is easy to hold, which makes it perfect for learning macramé knots.

- The combed cotton is often used in the production of feathers and leaves macramé because as its name indicates, it is the one that combs more easily but it is very well suited to any other type of realization, its rendering is quite soft.

- The twisted cotton can also be combed but a little more difficult and will have a slightly wavy rendering, unlike the combed cotton which will be smooth. And it too can be used in many achievements.

- The braided cotton can be used for many achievements including suspensions for plants because it is very pleasant to work when you have to make knots.

For outdoor macramé creations, discover our Braided synthetic yarn. Available in pretty colors musk this synthetic rope will remain intact outdoors! The Polyester braided rope - Parallel core is also treated anti-UV and totally imputrescible.

Outdoors but under cover, you can use twisted cotton rope. Cotton is resistant to moisture when it dries, otherwise the spots of mold may appear.

Otherwise, the jute twine is very pretty and resistant to moisture.

Discover our macrame tool and accessories category. They will help you to expand your creativity and become the best allies of your macramé creations!

To smooth the feathers and leaves in macramé, we advise you to use a macramé brush and/ or fine comb to have an impeccable rendering.

After roughly cutting the edges of your leaf or pen, place it on a flat surface (if possible you protect a minimum) to brush the cords.

Do not be afraid to brush a little hard, you will need several passes and patience to get a soft and beautiful look.

You can soak it in water and gently clean it with Marseille soap. Once washed, dry your creation flat!

For dust, it is good to pass the special textile transparent waterproof... It makes it easier to dust them (with a brush or vacuum) and prevents stains from sticking.

Our orders are prepared every day with care to offer you the best service.

The majority of our ropes for decoration are made in France. The origin of our ropes is specified in the product descriptions.

  • the twisted rope
  • the braided rope
  • the combed rope
  • the cotton air

Each type of rope comes in many diameters, sizes and colors.

Our cotton ropes come in over 90 different colours. The most popular colour is the natural colour of cotton: ecru.

To make your color search easier, you can "Filter" the colors you want!

It is the twisted cotton rope. The diameter 10mm or 12mm can be well for a rainbow, it all depends on the final rendering you want. You can use a smaller diameter for a finer rendering.

You can soak it in water and gently clean it with Marseille soap. Once washed, dry your creation flat!

For dust, it is good to pass the special textile transparent waterproof... It makes it easier to dust them (with a brush or vacuum) and prevents stains from sticking.

Natural ropes are used in various areas such as decoration, macramé, crochet, crafts, furniture, events, adventure parks, security, industry and agriculture.

Many natural fibres are used to make rope:

  • hemp
  • cotton
  • sisal
  • jute
  • linen
  • coconut fibre

The strongest material is hemp. The most used materials in decoration are cotton and jute.

Natural rope can be used outdoors but it is not recommended to store your natural rope in the sun and weather permanently. It will degrade in the long run and may even eventually break.

Like any natural material, the natural rope is sensitive to weather, moisture and UV rays.

The softest natural rope is cotton rope. If you are looking for sweetness, you will also find it with the hemp rope.

In general, all natural ropes are soft. The only rough and grainy fibre is sisal.

The strongest natural rope is hemp rope.

The strongest natural string is linen twine.

Our natural twines are made of cotton, linen, jute, sisal, raffia, coco and wool.
