How is synthetic hemp rope made ?
The synthetic hemp rope is made of textured polypropylene. Polypropylene yarns are worked to give a more fibrous and less shiny appearance. It is this finish that makes the rope look like natural hemp.
How to cut this rope ?
The synthetic hemp rope can be cut cold or hot.
- Cold cut :
- Small diameters (4mm, 5mm, 6mm): the easiest is to roll a piece of tape in the place of the cut and cut with scissors. For a more neat finish, you can make a end whipping by tying the end of the rope with jute or linen twine.
Tip for the end whipping: put a scotch before cutting the rope to promote a clean cut and then make the surliure in second time.
- Medium and large rope: cut with cutter
- Hot cut :
- knife: heat a sharp knife and cut
- electric hot knife cutter : Pull the trigger, wait 5 seconds for the iron to heat up and then simply shearing the rope.
The electric hot knife cutter is a useful accessory for precise work and finishing of ropes without any fraying.

- Does not burn hands
- Resistance to abrasion and high heat
- Sensitive to moisture (Do not store outdoors)
- Gives off a smell that fades over time (close to that of hay)
For indoor, you can use both. For outdoor, prefer synthetic hemp.
Natural hemp, as its name suggests, is made exclusively from hemp fiber. It is very soft to the touch and does not burn hands with rubbing. It offers an authentic and rustic appearance and emits a slight smell that reinforces its natural effect.
Synthetic hemp is made from textured polypropylene fibres. It has the advantage of being UV-treated and resistant to weather and moisture, which makes it more durable in the long term. Its appearance and touch are a very good imitation of natural hemp.
Hemp has a slight natural smell similar to that of hay. Its odor fades away and disappears over time.
To quickly remove the smell of hemp, let the rope air out for several days.
The fibres of natural hemp are sensitive to moisture. It is not recommended to store hemp rope outdoors or in a closed place with moisture if you want to keep its quality in the long term.
For outdoor use, we advise you to buy the synthetic hemp rope because it is rot-proof, anti-UV treated. It will not be damaged in the long term, regardless of weather conditions.

Anti UV treatment
To stay intact in the face of prolonged exposure to the sun, our synthetics are treated to resist UV.
Better resistance to weather
Rain, snow, sea water... Our synthetic ropes are designed to last in the face of moisture and corrosion.
Longer life
The synthetic rope is suitable for long-term decoration of your exterior. You can choose the synthetic hemp rope for a natural effect guaranteed.
For an outdoor railing, we recommend the synthetic hemp rope diameter 26mm, 28mm, 30mm, 36mm, 40mm or 46mm. This rope is rot-proof, moisture resistant and UV treated.
The rope used in the photos below is in diameter 28mm.
For indoor installation, you can use polished hemp rope (natural) or synthetic hemp rope.
Note that the natural hemp rope has a slight odor that fades over time.
For a handrail/stair railing, take a rope of 26mm, 28mm or 30mm.
For a guardrail, take a rope of diameter 28mm, 30mm, 32mm, 36mm, 40mm or 46mm.
Our ropes can be used for star railings, balustrades, mezzanine security or guardrail.
Polypropylene is the most economical and lightweight fibre. It has an excellent quality/price ratio for uses that do not require a rope with a high performance mechanical strength.
Polypropylene is floating and hydrophobic. It can be in permanent contact with water without degrading itself. It is resistant to moisture.
Density: 0.91
Polypropylene fiber has good UV resistance but it is still inferior to polyester and nylon.
For a better outdoor life, make sure that your polypropylene rope is treated against UV. All our polypropylene ropes are.
Polypropylene is resistant to mites, bacteria, strong acids and alkalis and ordinary solvents. It is sensitive to aromatic compounds. It dissolves in chlorinated solvents at high temperatures.
